Annotated academic sources: Internationalising Higher Education

Damme, D. V, 2001. ‘Quality issues in the internationalisation of higher education.’ Higher Education , vol. (41 ) no. (4), pp. (415-441).

This article written by Dirk Van Damme investigates the issues of internationalisation of higher education. The author examines the effects it has on both the students and the universities. He looks into how international students came about and how universities first started to create an international aspect of their higher education. The quality issues and challenges are discussed in this paper as many have risen since this program has started and also continue to grow. The author also researches the reasoning universities encourage international students and what they gain from these internationalisations of high education. This is a relevant source because it was written by Dirk Van Damme who is the head of Centre for Educational Research and Innovation making it evident that his paper about this topic will be accurate and relevant to my research. A imitation to the paper however, is that it’s was published in 2001 which will limit me as the information and research may be out dated and some findings will have changed. Additionally, this may affect the challenges and quality issues he discusses as they may be different or better today for these students. This article will allow me to investigate the issues with international students, giving me resources and accurate research that will uncover this topic. Primarily this will uncover what is not talked about with universities as it goes beyond the students and to the root of the problem.
Zhang, J, 2010. ‘Predictors of international students’ psychosocial adjustment to life in the United States: A systematic review.’ International Journal of Intercultural Relations, vol. (35), no. (2), pp. (139-162).

This journal article from ‘International Journal of Intercultural Relations’ by Jing Zhang discusses the psychosocial adjustments to life for international students in the united states. This is a case study that examines the mental health and social interaction of international students finding out how they adjust and find a sense of belonging. The case study shows 64 students’ who published journals that were examined to find out their stress levels, social support, how they dealt with language barriers, self-efficacy and personality were affected while they experienced they life in a foreign country. This source is relevant to the topic of internationalisation high education as it investigates the real effects this has on students. Giving the real results of these 64 students will create accuracy in my research as giving these results will legitimatise my argument with these examples and statements. This journal article was published in 2011 continuing to make it evident of its relevancy as its not out of date and will be accurate. A limitation to this journal article is that some of the article were publish from 1990 which will be a setback on the relevancy and those results won’t be as useful as the other results in the journal article.  This article will allow me to extend my research as these results from the student’s journals will allow me to completely understand the experiences of international students
